Since a few people were asking about this last night, and a few new people have started tanking Onyxia, I thought I'd explain the gear I wear (other choices might suit other people depending on spec though!).
Gear I wear is up at: ctprofiles.net/1987466
I mostly go for max stamina first, FR and defense second.
Main reasons I go for this combination of gear:
- Have 95 FR in this gear completely unbuffed anyway
- High stamina helps survive both physical and fire damage, high FR just helps with fire
- High stamina is guaranteed to absorb damage. High FR is only a chance to resist damage. If I go full FR gear, I lose about 1.5k health, 500 armour, 60 defense, can still take a 3k fire breath (it's just less likely), plus I take consistently more physical damage all fight long, and many more crits.
- Fully buffed with imp., I go up to around 7.9k health, which is enough to absorb two 3k fire breaths, and a 1k cleave crit in rapid succession (if my health is high)
- The tank who Onyxia isn't aggroed on generates virtually no rage apart from fire breaths (and the odd cleave). When I don't have aggro, I'd rather take a lot of fire damage to keep my rage and therefore aggro high
- I've tried tanking in full FR gear, and found myself going down to very low health WAY more often. The only times I've died with this set of gear is when things have gone horribly wrong anyway (50%+ healers already dead, whelps everywhere etc).
This is a similar set of gear to that which I wear in BWL, for similar reasons. It's mostly that stamina is reliable protection against damage of all kinds, whereas going for purely high defense or high FR improves your resistance to one kind of attack, but still leaves you open to huge spikes from the other.
