Some damage calculations for max DPS and max damage for instance use when you get that DPS spot.
So there you are, looking at that big bad boss monster that's capable of killing you and your offspring in the next 3 generations if he just even takes a small glimpse at your general direction. You begin to wonder: What spells should I use to achieve maximum damage done over time and how? No worries, I'll try to theorycraft the best possible cycles to us to use.
The stats that are irrelevant for us are: +damage (406) and manapool (6000). VT acts as the sole source of manaregen. MPS is mana used - VT mana gained per second.
Using only MF.
DPS 351
MPS 58
time to go oom 103 seconds
Total damage: 36153
Using MF and VT
DPS 418
MPS 56
oom 107 seconds
Total damage: 44785
SW:P + VT + MF
DPS 530
MPS 68
oom 87 secs
Total damage: 46163
(edit: Blergh, the next is totally wrong. The actual DPS gain should be around 40DPS instead of 70DPS for VT, SW:P, MF, MB cycle compared to the SW:P, VT, MF cycle. I seem not to calculate the DPS reduction for VT and SW:P casting times for the 3*MF + MB cycles. I need to rework the equation for the cycle some later time. Meantime, just agree that MB is not good to use with boss DPS cycles )
SW:P + VT + MF + MB (I used the MF, MF, MF, MB cycle for optimum DPS. I don't have a single point in imp MB)
DPS 601
MPS 92
oom 64 secs
Total damage: 38464
During a bossfight, the best possible cycle seems to be SW:P, VT and MF. For trashmobs, toss an MB here and there.
Aggro reduction talents: Get these. Since the introduction of VT, we horde shadowpriest are now aggro limited. Forget about having that aggro reduction totem, since either shammies are in other groups or they use real totems, and not that silly Paladinwannabetotem.
Some aggro generation values with improved VE, VT (there's controversial info about VT aggro generation. Some say it's 1:1, some say it's 1:0.1. I draw my amount off the hat to 1:0.1) and DPS combined. If you think the calculations are off, please show me where. I'm propably too tired (I'm suffering from insomnia at the moment, and a good calculation marathon always makes me sleepy :] ) to spot all the errors there.
With no aggro reduction talents:
1+.5*.3*5+.1*5*.05 = your hate generation is 1.775 times higher than your DPS. Talk about pwning the hatelist in no time.
With shadow affinity
1*.75+5*.3*5+.1*5*.05 = your hate generation is 1.525 times higher than your DPS. Still preeetty high.
With silent resolve and SA
1*.75*.8+5*.3*5+.1*5*.05 = hate generation is 1.325 times your DPS. Might be a good time to not use VE here and there, but overall, you're close to manageable amounts of hate.
In a perfect world, a shadowpriest is grouped with healers. Healers shouldn't be taking constant damage, so the calculations above are the absolute worst case scenario. From personal experience, I can spot the shadowpriests with no aggro reduction from the ones with aggro reduction talents pretty quickly by judging the amount of damage they do and how much aggro they draw.
